The Utica Normal and Industrial Institute was established by William H. Holtzclaw, a graduate of Tuskegee Institute. At first a privately-owned school was organized and taught in the open air, until temporary quarters were secured. Having secured teaching and living quarters, students boarded and worked for their education. The institute was organized and, therefore, had its actual beginning as such, March 19, 1903.
For years, the school was guided by the genius of its founder and was supported entirely by gifts from friends.
