Belmont Academy Charter School (BACS) opened its doors in 1998 with the mission to provide an intensive education program to underserved children in Philadelphia. Recognizing that children living in poverty have historically faced the greatest risk of school failure, BACS seeks to break this cycle by providing high need students with comprehensive educational opportunities. BACS achieves this vision through a lottery style enrollment system, granting priority to those students classified most at risk. Housed in a historic building which formerly served as a neighborhood church, BACS exudes the feeling of an intimate "family" based style of learning. Its present preschool and kindergarten programs serve a modest sized population of 185 students and offer a remarkable student to teacher ratio of 8:1.
