The philosophy of the Fort Cherry School District begins by having each child recognize the importance of self, family, community and country. The district believes that as children acquire self-understanding it hopes they will understand and appreciate people belonging to social, cultural and ethnic groups different from their own. The district believes that all children have a right to an education, whether they are academically gifted on one extreme, or mentally retarded on the other. The district shall endeavor to find an educational placement for every child. Academically, each child must strive to acquire mastery of the basic subject skills according to his/her mental ability. Each child must be helped to acquire a positive approach toward the learning process. The habits and attitudes of responsible citizenship must be taught and reinforced so that children will understand the democratic principles of freedom and responsibility. The district has the responsibility to help children acquire good health habits and an understanding of the conditions necessary for the maintaining of social, emotional and mental processes. Since each child is an individual, opportunities must be given for every child to be creative in one or more fields of endeavor. The district shall strive to help every child to understand the opportunities available by preparing him/her for a productive life. The past achievements of men and women in natural and social studies should be studied with an understanding of the accomplishments or contributions that have been made to society.
