About JUAN B GALAVIZ CHARTER SCHOOL

Description provided by the district or community โ€” not part of the NCES dataset.

JBG is a small campus located in Houston's northside. We are a public charter school providing all coursework free of charge. Our teacher/student ratio is maintained at 1:15. We subscribe to a democratic instructional model which promotes teacher creativity built around a paradigm that recognizes the assets students bring to school as opposed to a deficit model which views students as deficit entities. We espouse this model through our strong incorporation of a culturally relevant curriculum and a strong emphasis on socio-political awareness. Our focus on the core recommended curriculum allows our students the opportunity to complete their high school program in three years. We provide tutorials for students requiring additional instructional assistance. We also provide the opportunity for students to partcipate in after-school athletics through the City of Houston's Parks and Recreation Department. As a Boy Scouts of America Explorer Post, we are able to offer outdoor educational experiences focussing on both academic enhancement and character development. JBG is proudly an NCLR (National Council of La Raza) affiliate. Our mission is to empower disenfranchised at-risk youth to achieve academic success, build self-esteem, and develop leadership skills and creative thinking.
